Storm Center Update Saturday AM – September 23


This weekend will be a good opportunity to test your umbrellas, rainjackets, and rain boots! Widespread rain is likely for much of KELOLAND today with greatest amounts in the central and northeast regions. The orientation of the rain will be from southwest to northeast. 

This is a very slow moving system, so when it starts in your area, it may not end for quite awhile. We expect rain amounts of 2-4” with locally higher amounts by early next week.

Because of the slow movement and slightly warmer temps, there is a marginal risk for severe weather for parts of eastern and southeast KELOLAND.

Temperatures (not just highs, even tonight’s overnight lows) won’t really change much this weekend. Daytime highs will be warmest in the southeast with temps mostly in the 70s, warmer 80s will be found in NW Iowa. The rest of KELOLAND will be in the cooler air mass so expect cooler temps only warming to the 50s to near 60 in central and northeast SD while the Black Hills and western SD will be stuck in the 40s.

Tonight’s lows will dip into the 50s and 60s with cooler 40s (and even 30s) in western SD. The rain chances continue into the overnight.

We’ll carry the rain chances well into Sunday as well however it looks like the rain should thin out Sunday afternoon. Then another round of rain will move in from the south and if projections hold true, this will be the southeast’s greatest chance for a good soaking that will last well into Monday. Sunday’s highs will be similar to today’s with highs mostly in the 50s to near 60 except for the southeast where temps will warm to the 70s again with a repeat of those 80s in northwest Iowa.

The rain will come to an end by Tuesday next week. The rest of the forecast remains dry with much cooler highs in the 60s.
