Fifty-one Special Olympics athletes from South Dakota will be going for gold during next week’s USA Games in Seattle.
The group takes off from Sioux Falls on Saturday. The team will be competing in swimming, track and field, basketball, bocce and softball. More than 4,000 athletes are expected to participate along with 10,000 volunteers. The opening and closing ceremonies will be broadcast on ESPN.
“They were selected last September, the athletes were. Basically been working with their coaches to find time between all the other events that we have going on all year to get together as a group. Some are from all parts of the state, so that’s a little challenging. They’re getting together and practicing when they can,” Assistant Sports Director Chad VanderPoel said.
The Special Olympics South Dakota team is expected to walk in the opening ceremony on Sunday. Coverage starts at 2:30 p.m. CT.
