The Jackrabbit softball team saw its four-game winning streak come to an end Tuesday in a 14-3 loss to Nebraska at Bowlin Stadium.
South Dakota State (24-8) had five hits in the game, including an Ali Herdliska home run and Mallory McQuistan double. Peyton Daugherty, Lyndsey Crist and Megan Rushing added singles for the Jackrabbit offense.
Kendra Conard (8-1) took her first loss of the year in the start, as she, Morgan DeMarais, Taylor Compton and Olivia Douglas pitched for SDSU.
Nebraska opened up a 3-0 lead in the first behind a two-run home run and a two-out RBI double, but the Jacks struck back for a pair of runs in the top of the second to cut the deficit to two.
Crist started the inning with a single to left and moved to second on a ground ball to the right side. With one gone and a runner in scoring position, McQuistan blasted a double off the left-center wall, and though Crist was caught initially between third and home, and errant throw allowed her and McQuistan come home.
The Huskers answered SDSU’s rally with one of their own, however, and tacked on another five runs in the bottom of the second to go ahead, 8-2.
SDSU got one back on a solo home run from Herdliska in the third, but Nebraska pushed two more runs across in the bottom of the inning, then four more in the fourth.
Down 14-3, the Jacks put a pair of runners on in the fifth, but were unable to extend the game as they fell by run-rule for only the second time all season.
South Dakota State returns to Summit League action this weekend in its home opener, hosting Western Illinois in a three-game set. First pitch for a Saturday doubleheader is at noon, with an 11 a.m. start in the finale Sunday.
