South Dakota State dropped a hard-fought, 2-0 contest to Arizona State Monday night at Fishback Soccer Park.
The Jackrabbits (4-4) pressured ASU throughout the contest and put up 10 shots in the game, but only placed two on goal and were unable to break through the Sun Devil defense. Arizona State (3-2) had 12 shots in the game and put eight on goal.
Annie Williams led the Jacks with four shots (one on goal), playing 82 minutes in the back line. Bianca Madonia had two attacks in the game and Abigail Kastens logged the other shot on goal.
Kaitlin Zabel and Alexa Hepner joined goalkeeper Maggie Smither in playing complete games. Smither recorded five saves and was tagged for a pair of goals.
“First, thanks to Arizona State for making the trip to Brookings,” head coach Brock Thompson said. “It’s not every year we get to play a team like that at home. They’re a very good team and they made us better today. I’m very proud of our team by the way we fought and battled. I thought we had some moments to flip the game, and credit to Arizona State for capitalizing on their moments.”
Arizona State took a 1-0 lead midway through the first, putting a shot from the top of the box in the back of the net at 20:47.
The Jacks looked to strike back quickly when Madonia stole a pass in ASU territory and found Kastens in the box in the 29th. Kastens’ shot, however, was tipped into the post at the last second and corralled by the Sun Devil keeper.
Early in the second, SDSU had another chance when Marisa Schulz laid a cross into the box from the left side, but it skipped past a trio of charging Jackrabbits as ASU held on to the lead.
The Sun Devils made it 2-0 in the 77th, though the Jacks again had a near-miss one minute later when Carina McLennan’s effort from the box slid inches over the crossbar.
That was it, however, as South Dakota State’s comeback efforts fell short in the first-ever meeting between the schools.
South Dakota State ended a six-game homestand Monday, going 4-2 in the first set of games at Fishback Soccer Park in 2018.
Maggie Smither is now alone in fourth in the Jackrabbit record books with 46 games played at goalie.
South Dakota State women’s soccer heads West this week for a pair of games, taking on Idaho State Thursday and Eastern Washington Sunday.
