Roosevelt Baseball Reaches Perfection

Sports

Jack Blogg got Brandon Valley’s Cade Terveer to pop out to second baseman Carlos Caro for the game’s final out, and South Dakota high school baseball history was made.

“To go undefeated is a total bonus. We just wanted to win the state championship and we accomplished that. These guys have worked so hard all year, and have stayed together, and are a very tight knit group,” Head Coach Joel Sage said.

“It’s pretty special. I mean, it doesn’t happen. I can say I was a part of this team. A great group of guys and built a family around each other. Never got mad at each other, pick each other up and good things would happen in the end,” Junior Pitcher Gus Radel said.

With the perfect season now a reality, Roosevelt senior catcher Jack Simonsen points to the adversity the Riders faced in regions, including needing a walk-off grand slam just make the state tournament, that helped lead them to their ultimate goal

“I think it kind of woke us up. We came into that region, I mean maybe a little flat. Two tight games against two really good pitchers, kind of woke us up and made us realize, that’s not going to fly at state,” Roosevelt Catcher Jack Simonsen said.

33 and 0. The greatest season in Class A baseball history, but for Head Coach Joel Sage, he’s not thinking about what his team just accomplished, but instead, just trying to enjoy the moment.

“Right now we’re just on cloud nine. I don’t know if I can look back right now. We’re just going to enjoy this moment, soak up every second and go be together a little longer, and savor every minute,” Roosevelt Head Coach  Joel Sage said.

For now, this Roosevelt team stands alone, and it can’t be hard to argue about their place in history.

“We’re one of the best teams to ever play high school baseball,” Roosevelt Catcher Jack Simonsen said

The championship victory is Roosevelt’s first state title since 2013.
