National Tennis Tournament Returns To Sioux Falls

Sports

The USTA National Level 3 Tennis Tournament returned to Sioux Falls this weekend. The three day tournament began Saturday and lasts through Monday out at Huether Family Match Point. It’s one of six 14-under national tournaments going on this weekend and features some of the best boys and girls players in the country. Three South Dakota boys are competing in the tournament with Rocky Mckenzie and Drew Gohl competing in the individual tournament, while James Yousef partnered with Mckenzie in doubles. Tournament Director Mark Vellek says its a great opportunity to showcase the sport to local players and fans.

“To be able to showcase this and bring players in, to really what is really a strong tennis community and has been for a long time. To showcase an event like this, and expose our kids to it, a lot of our kids have been out watching. So for them to see this level of play of kids their age is really neat to be able to showcase here,” Vellek said.

Mckenzie and Gohl both fell in the singles consolation bracket today. All three South Dakota athletes lost in yesterday’s doubles tournament.
