Lennox junior Madysen Vlastuin is our second nominee for the Sanford Pentagon/KELOLAND Media Group Player of the Year award. Vlastuin helped the Orioles to a third place finish at the state “A” tournament and has the program headed in a positive direction.
Lennox standout Madysen Vlastuin is only a junior, but has been a part of the Orioles’ starting five for the past four seasons.
“I think starting 8th grade year, I had a different perspective and I don’t know, it’s just kind of cool to start 8th grade year. I think that just gives me more experience and now I’m so used to playing in varsity games that it just comes naturally to me now,” Lennox junior Madysen Vlastuin said.
Vlastuin’s comfort on the court can also be directly tied to the support she’s received away from the hardwood.
“Definitely my family. I watched my brothers and sister play basketball growing up. I think that has helped me with basketball. My dad loves going to the gym with me and I think that has really helped growing up too and my mom she is the best supporter,” Vlastuin said.
Vlastuin averaged nearly 17 points, six rebounds, and two assists, while shooting over 48 percent this season, but remains eager to improve.
“What stands out is her willingness to be coached. She comes in everyday, she does what is asked. This year we really focused on getting her post touches and she was open to that and she worked on that everyday in practice,” Lennox head coach Adam Quail said.
A combination of talent and hard work earned Vlastuin a spot in our final five.
“It doesn’t suprise me at all. Madysen has stepped up to every challenge. She has lived up to the hype since she started as an eighth grader,” Quail said.
“It’s an honor. I think being in the runnings with Myah Sellend and Macy Miller, I think it is really an honor. I wouldn’t get here without my teammates and my coaches pushing me,” Vlastuin said.
Vlastuin averaged 17 points and eight rebounds per game at the state “A” tournament.
The Player of the Year will be announced during the All-Star Banquet on Saturday, March 30th at the Sanford Pentagon. The event starts at 7:00, and is free and open to the public.
