It hasn't even opened yet, but demand is driving a planned expansion for a unique business in northwest Sioux Falls.
Win Chill Cold Storage announced Monday that it will start work on an expansion to its warehouse before opening in May. The company says that it has seen high demand from other businesses for its ability to freeze and store frozen and refrigerated goods for shipping by truck and rail.
Across the nation, there's a huge need for refrigerated warehouses, mainly driven by increasing demand for perishable foods and fruits.
"When we all came together to develop this facility, we knew it had tremendous potential, and the demand has lived up to those expectations," says Win Chill president Mike Rush. "We continue to hear from companies throughout the region that are interested and need this type of facility. Demand has been tremendous.
The additional space will cost about $18 to $20 million and will add 125,000 square feet for storage. The warehouse and distribution center was originally planned to be about 205,000 square feet and will be located at Foundation Park near interstates 29 and 90.
The business will employ about 75 workers when phase one of the facility opens next month.
