Vending Machine Art

Your Money Matters

It’s an art show like you’ve probably never seen before! The Ipso Art Gallery in Downtown Sioux Falls was showcasing unique displays that allow the visitor to take home an original piece of artwork!

Just looking at these things, you may not understand what they do.

“We kind of wanted that whimsical, almost kind of Willy Wonka style approach that artists would take if you assigned them the task of building a vending machine,” said Heeren.

These “vending machines” aren’t as much like a machine, as they are interactive art installations. Each one has smaller artwork inside!

All of the pieces are interactive. Some of them you just go up and touch. Others require a little more work to get the art out.

“We wanted to encourage this accessibility and prompt people to consider collecting an original object, in a world where we don’t have a lot of original objects,” said Liz Heeren, Ipso Art Gallery Director.

“There’s 2D pieces. There’s things that maybe reminisce of toys. So there’s just a lot to choose from,” said Michelle St. Vrain, artist.

Each piece of smaller art is only $5 to take home. The Ipso Gallery and artists are hoping events like this will encourage more people to get involved in the changing art scene in Sioux Falls.

“First of all, get people excited and enable them to have fun at an art experience. And second, prompt them to think about art a little bit differently,” said Heeren.

“I know that there’s a stigma attached to it quite often. That it might be kind of a stale environment, and maybe intimidating. But having shows like this I think shows that it can be whimsical, it can be exciting, and yeah, just fun,” said St. Vrain.

The show started at 6:00 and goes until 8:00 Friday night, so if you’re interested you should head to the Ipso Gallery across from the Courthouse Museum soon!
