New Details On Major Development Planned Near Empire Mall

Your Money Matters

More stores will soon be coming to an area near The Empire Mall.

As we first told you Tuesday, work will soon start on a new retail center located just north of the mall.

The area along 41st Street, just north of The Empire Mall, will soon look a lot different.

Empire Place will consist of several buildings, offering stores, restaurants, maybe even multifamily housing.

“We have the possibility to be creative and tailor the buildings and the design and the look to the interest that we get,” Raquel Blount with Lloyd Companies said.

Blount is marketing the property. She says she’s already seeing interest.

“To have seven acres with a clean slate to work with is really exciting,” Blount said.

Even though downtown Sioux Falls has been a hot spot for redevelopment, Blount says many retailers still only want to locate near the mall.

“The 41st and Louise intersection is known to be the highest trafficked intersection in the state,” Blount said.

While the mall has seen a lot of recent turnover, several new stores have recently announced they’ll be opening. That includes Scandinavian Designs, which is going into the former Toys R Us space, Camping World which is in the former Sears spot, and Dillard’s which will open in the space once occupied by Younkers.

“Dillard’s has been looking to enter into this market for, I don’t even know how long, but we’ve never had the opening, so now that we do, it was a perfect fit,” Kirsten Schaffer, director of marketing and business development at The Empire Mall, told KELOLAND News in December.

A fit that will soon physically have a different look.

“Visibility is very important,” Blount said.

Autos on the Mall, which is currently located on some of the land, will move at the end of the year.

The leasing process is now starting for Empire Place, with the first businesses expected to open in 2020.
