Wentworth, S.D. (KELO) — A local farm is operating a national business right from home! The Backus family is making some unique popcorn flavors that are a hit with people across the country.
If you drive out into the country, just outside of the small town of Wentworth, South Dakota, you’ll come across a friendly sign inviting you to stop by Gaylen’s Homegrown Popcorn.
“Having a good name in the community, the community pretty much takes it from there. That’s what really helps us out is the great word of mouth we get around this area,” said Backus.
That good name has definitely been working for the home-based business.
The converted garage serves as a production line and shop for treats they create with the popcorn grown on the farm.
Gaylen’s Popcorn is now available in gas stations and grocery stores from Madison to Sioux Falls. They’re also working on their online presence by being active on social media, and keeping their website up to date.
“We get at least a couple online orders usually a week and those get sent out. We even had five go out today and they’re all mainly going to different states,” said Backus.
Gaylen’s will also be providing popcorn for the new Oh Nuts! store going into the Empire Mall soon.
So, what’s so special about popcorn? The flavors are far from ordinary.
“A cheesy taco, kind of for Cinco de Mayo. And we just came up with caramel cinnamon roll, as well. So that one is still kind of unique. It gives you a nice little sweet, cinnamon and it has white chocolate to resemble the frosting. So those are some of the fun ones,” said Backus.
Tyler Backus says it’s been a great experience helping the family business his father started years ago; one flavor at a time.
“Some hit. Some don’t hit. Just trying new things and try to bring a lot of people in that way,” said Backus.
Backus says they are now offering a subscription program, so you can get a few of the latest flavors delivered to your door each month.
