Herberger's Closing In Watertown Leaves The Town Without A Department Store

watertown, sd - 2018 is shaping up to be a tough year for retailers.

Bon Ton is expected to close stores in four South Dakota cities.  The news has a lot of people wondering whether the local malls will bounce back after losing Younkers and Herberger's.

"The service is good. And now we've lost it," Karen Roe said.

Herberger's in Watertown is already missed.

"I thought where are we going to shop? I thought, where am I going to buy my Alfred Dunner?" Herbergers shopper Karen Roe said.

Karen Roe says it's one of the only places in town to buy clothes.

Now, she doesn't know where she'll shop.

"I honestly don't know. Because I can't drive to Sioux Falls and go to Younkers, because now that's closed," Roe said.

There is hope, however, says Watertown Mayor Sarah Caron.

"Very, very disappointing. And on the heels of one of the best announcements we've had ever," Watertown Mayor Sarah Caron said.

Caron thinks the space won't be empty for long-- because earlier this week Terex announced they'd be opening a new plant-- adding 400 jobs.

"Hopefully someone will come in on the heels, and I know there have been other retailers looking at Watertown, to maybe move here and open," Caron said.

Still, it won't be the same for Karen Roe.

"It's a cornerstone. Herbergers downtown, and then it came to the mall. It's been in Watertown a long time," Roe said.

Bon-Ton, the corporate company who owns Younkers and Herberger's is also closing Bon-Ton stores across the country.
