Crews are breaking ground on the first Fleet Farm in South Dakota.
As KELOLAND News first told you last month, the retailer is building a location at the Sanford Sports Complex.
City leaders say this is not just a store, but a big economic benefit to the city. At a time when many stores are closing because of online shopping, Fleet Farm is expanding quickly.
“We are counterintuitive to what’s happening in the retail world,” Fleet Farm Vice President of Real Estate & Construction Tom Carrico said.
Fleet Farm plans to open five stores this year and seven next year. That includes this 185,000 square foot store that will offer everything from clothing to camping supplies.
“What differentiates us from our competition is the amount of items that we carry in our store,” Carrico said.
“Some people will use the term ‘The Walmart Effect.’ When a Walmart goes in somewhere, development happens around it. I see a similar thing happening with Fleet Farm,” Sioux Falls Mayor Paul TenHaken said.
Fleet Farm will also bring around 150 to 200 jobs to Sioux Falls.
“This is a catalyst commitment that they’ve made that’s just going to spur a lot of other development, which will in turn start to continue to drive our sales tax revenue, which we know has been sluggish,” TenHaken said.
While this is the first Fleet Farm location in South Dakota, it’s likely not the last. Carrico says they’re actively looking for future locations across the Midwest.
“We believe we’ll be able to deliver a great product to the citizens of Sioux Falls and the surrounding communities,” Carrico said.
Several new businesses are coming to the Sanford Sports Complex.
In addition to Fleet Farm, Great Shots and The Summit League will soon call this area home.
