The Bird Cage, the Convention Center, the Denny Sanford PREMIER Center and Howard Wood Field. All of these popular spots in Sioux Falls are on one campus.
Until now, there’s been a lot of talk about what this area should look like. Now, the Mayor is ready to take action.
“We’re past the consultant phase. We’re at the decision making phase,” Sioux Falls Mayor Paul TenHaken said.
Lots of studies have been done to examine the buildings on the Events Campus, but Mayor Paul TenHaken wants to bring it all together.
That’s why he’s creating a task force to come up with a master plan.
“That’s what I’m really tasking this task force with is to think boldly about what the entirety of this campus needs to look like and not just pocketed pieces of development,” TenHaken said.
The study group will be looking into more parking, whether to fix up aging facilities and how to get more hotel options nearby.
Dan Statema will help lead the group as a co-chair, but they’re still looking for more community members to get involved.
“I think a variety of perspectives is really important and you’re never sure where that next great idea is going to come from,” Statema said.
TenHaken says one of the biggest challenges the group will face is finding ways to bring more retail and private investments to the area, but he is hopeful they can create a plan that will take this area from talk to action.
“This doesn’t become a binder on a shelf. This becomes a plan that we move forward with because we’re past the binder on the shelf phase. We’re at the point that we actually have to make some decisions,” TenHaken said.
With the group beginning in February, TenHaken hopes to have a plan on his desk by the end of the summer.
