If you still have some Christmas shopping to do, you only have a week to do it.

If you’re thinking about giving someone a pet for Christmas, a local shelter official is hoping you’ll think again.

Animals are not ideal Christmas presents according to Sioux Falls Area Humane Society Executive Director Kori Baade. In fact, her shelter has a policy against giving pets as gifts.

“The person may not want one; their landlords may not allow them to have a pet; they may not think it’s a good time in their life; it may not be a pet they’re connecting with,” Baade said.

Baade says the shelter has adoption counselors to help individuals and families decide if a pet is right for them.
