Worthington Stocking Trailer For Hurricane Victims

News

Worthington residents are gearing up for the 2017 King Turkey Day Festival this weekend. They’re also keeping Hurricane Harvey victims in their thoughts and prayers by collecting donations for those in need.

Local volunteers are loading up this semi trailer in Worthington with donations for Hurricane Harvey victims in Texas.

“So from our hearts and homes to their hearts and homes,” Murphy said.

Susanne Murphy is organizing the effort. So far, this locally-themed trailer from Smith Trucking is almost fully-stocked.

“Really a community-wide thing where everybody just pitched in real fast to get this done,” Mike Smith said.

Coincidentally, with the King Turkey Day Festival taking place this weekend, a turkey race team from Cuero, TX, is in town prepping for tomorrow’s event. Brenda Martin says Cuero suffered some damages from the hurricane and surrounding communities were hit even harder.

“It’s amazing. We love our friends here in Minnesota. We always say it’s because two turkeys race but it’s a lot more than that. It’s overwhelming. It’s wonderful,” Martin said.

Not only is there water and non-perishable food items on the trailer, there are also two organs that are going to be delivered to churches devastated by Hurricane Harvey.

“Phil and Rita Smith are going to drive the truck themselves. It’s amazing. You’ll never meet more Christian or humble people in your world,” Murphy said.

They’ll leave Sunday to drop off the items at a church in Cuero. That church then distributes the donations to those in need.

“It’s going to be an ongoing process. People are going back to their homes with maybe partial living areas. Some are total losses,” Martin said.

Worthington residents are hoping these donations make life better for a community they’ve built a friendship with over the years.

The 78th Annual King Turkey Day Festival takes place Friday and Saturday. The turkey race known as the Great Gobbler Gallop takes place at 1:30 p.m. on 10th St. in Worthington.
