Woman Assaulted During Burglary, Child Taken By Father

A Sioux Falls man is accused of taking his child by force with two other men from the home of his estranged wife.

At about 2 p.m. Monday, a woman was home with her 5-month-old child when she heard a loud noise behind her home in the 900 block of West 7th Street near North Grange Avenue.

Public Information Officer Sam Clemens said three men forced their way into the home. After walking past her, the second man shoved the mother and the third suspect pushed her down, strangled her and broke her phone while she tried to call 911.

After the three men left, the woman thought they were trying to find a set of car keys but discovered her child had been taken. She told officers that she recognized the first suspect as the father of the child and her estranged husband.  Clemens said the parents had been separated. The other two suspects were identified as acquaintances.

Police found 34-year-old Matthew Brian Johnson with the infant at his home in 200 block of North Euclid Avenue. He was arrested and charged with burglary, while the other suspects face multiple charges.

Bradley Keith Johnson, 37, of San Antonio, TX, was arrested and charged with simple assault for shoving the woman. Police charged 42-year-old Jeremy Michael Pettingell with aggravated assault, intentional damage to property and interfering with a 911 call.

The child was unharmed and returned back to the woman, Clemens said.
