A wolf may have been shot near Parkston.

On Wednesday, January 9, Jim Sinkebeil and Jim More shot a large canine when they were looking for coyotes.

The Game Fish and Parks Department has taken DNA from the animal and has sent it to a federal lab for identification.

It may take some time to get the information back because of the shutdown.

“Sometimes it’s hard to tell the difference between a large coyote and a small wolf. We had an animal once here that everybody was sure was a wolf, but it ended up actually being a domesticated animal with a chip in it,” Keith Fisk with the Game, Fish and Parks Department said.

The wolf is a federally protected species, so Game, Fish and Parks is working with other agencies on the case.
