Wild Game Feed Hosts Its Biggest Crowd Ever

News

An event that started as a way for hunters to clear the wild game out of their freezers has turned into so much more in Brandon.

The Wild Game Feed at 212 The Boiling Point continues to raise thousands of dollars for local kids by featuring exotic food — like smoked rattlesnake — you may not find at restaurants in KELOLAND. Monday night the event hosted its biggest crowd ever with more than 400 people.

“This is what we do. We cook for a living. As you can tell, we’re all having fun back here enjoying ourselves,” owner Mark Fonder said.

Fonder has been teaming up with the Brandon Valley Optimist Club for 10 years. All the money raised goes towards the school lunch program, the Backpack Program and an angel fund in the Brandon Valley School District.

“It becomes one of those things that I don’t want to see a kid go hungry and we have taken that on as our common goal,” Winkel said.

Unique plates like these make for some tasty headlines but people do actually show up in droves to eat something new. In fact, visitors traveled to Brandon from Rapid City and even Nebraska. Fonder enjoys cooking something a little off the menu as well.

“Yeah, I was actually wanting to order the camel, iguana, octupus. I’ll have to go out there and try it,” Fonder said.

It’s all in an effort to help students that fall just short of qualifying for free and reduced lunches. Who wouldn’t want to line up in support of that?

“And maybe not have to take a great big bite of it but it gives them a chance to eat something that they wouldn’t make for themselves anywhere else. That’s what makes it fun. We have a lot of different things that people would never expect to find at most places,” Winkel said.

The wild game feed continues again at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday. Last year, the event raised $10,000. Organizers are hoping to double that number this year.
