Hailstorms that moved through western South Dakota did extensive damage to the area around Piedmont.
Traffic was backed up on Interstate 90 for about five miles in both directions from the Piedmont exit after two to three-inch hail smashed windows and windshields on cars traveling on the Interstate.
Tow trucks had to be called in to clear the dozens of cars that couldn’t be moved safely, and the traffic jam lasted for several hours. The hail covered the ground and piled up in drifts in some places. There was also extensive damage to roofs, windows, and trees.
