Veteran Gets His Chance To Go On Midwest Honor Flight

Signing up for Midwest Honor Flight played a part in saving the life of a Minnesota Veteran.

Elmer Koopman made it to the Sioux Falls Airport for Mission Two this past May. Unfortunately, the Air Force Vet who served during the Korean War Era passed out at the gate and didn’t get to go. When he woke up he begged to get on the plane but honor flight medics and airport personnel told him he’d have to go to the hospital.

“We were sitting like this with my boarding pass in my hand and all at once I had a gut ache like I had to vomit. It just hit me like that. That’s all I remember,” Koopman said.

After a trip to the hospital, it was revealed Koopman had three blockages in his heart. He had a triple bypass this June and made it this week on Mission Three of Midwest Honor Flight.

We’ll take you through his story and show you his reaction to Washington, D.C., Thursday on KELOLAND News.
