Denny Sanford is getting another award for his philanthropy; this time it comes from the Vatican.
Sanford is receiving the 2018 Pontifical Key Philanthropy Award by the Vatican’s Pontifical Council for Culture and the Cura Foundation.
Delegates for the Vatican have come from Rome to give the award.
The group is recognizing Sanford’s generosity, vision and determination to address some of the world’s most urgent health care challenges.
The self-made billionaire first donated $16 million to the then Sioux Valley Hospitals and Health System to build a children’s hospital.
The healthcare organization is now known as Sanford Health.
Since then, Sanford has donated millions more, including a $400 million gift focused on ending type 1 diabetes, accelerating genomic medicine, and establishing children’s clinics around the world.
