The change in season also means changes for the Sioux Falls Area Humane Society.

It turns out March is when the Sioux Falls Area Humane Society starts seeing more animals coming through its doors.

“As the temperature starts to get nicer outside and as animals are outside more, especially with farm cats… they find other farm cats,” SFAHS Special Events Coordinator Allison Kolander said.

Allison Kolander says just under 100 animals are up for adoption right now, but more than 200 are in the care of the shelter.

That’s because they have animals in foster care, strays, and some still waiting to go up for adoption.

Kolander says they’ll likely see a steady increase through the summer months.

Luckily, the shelter’s biggest fundraiser of the year is just around the corner.

This year marks the 10th Paws to Celebrate.

The event in Sioux Falls features both a live and silent auction, plus more.

“We’re going to have live music and food from local chefs,” Kolander said.

The money raised helps fund a variety of needs.

“We’ll use every dime of it so we’re going to use it for medical expenses; we’re going to use it for spay and neutering,” Kolander said.

Tickets are still available for Paws to Celebrate, which will be held on March 17 from 6:00 pm to 11:00 pm at the Hilton Garden Inn in Downtown Sioux Falls.

You can buy tickets online or at the Sioux Falls Area Humane Society.

There will be a limited number of tickets available at the event.
