The plan was to haul more than 150 pounds of pot hundreds of miles from California to Chicago. But court papers say the illegal trip got cut short in Dewey County, South Dakota.
On Thursday, a tribal officer noticed a U-Haul going five miles over the speed limit on Highway 212.
When the officer stopped the truck, authorities say the driver seemed nervous so the officer called in a drug dog.
According to a federal complaint, a search turned up 147 packages of weed, weighing 157 pounds.
The passenger in the truck is a convicted felon with a long criminal record in Indiana. 25-year-old Brendan Lee has been in and out of jail and prison since he was 18 and was waiting to go on trial for state drug charges.
Federal court papers say Lee claims he bought the drugs himself and hired 25-year-old Sara Worthman to drive the moving truck because she has a valid driver’s license.
They both appeared in federal court Tuesday afternoon in Pierre.
