A Tweet posted last week of a message pleading for a kidney donation for a 10-year-old on the back of a car in Sioux Falls, SD has gone viral and is getting responses from across the world.

The message says “Kidney Donor Needed for 10 year old. Any O Blood Type.”

Luke Wiese shared the photo on Twitter asking the social network to “do your thing,” and they did. The post has been retweeted more than 12,000 times as of Sunday.

Responses came in from across the globe:

We first introduced you to the 10-year-old earlier this year. Gabriel Broghammer from Rapid City, SD has been undergoing dialysis while he’s staying at the Ronald McDonald House in Sioux Falls.  He was born with a blockage in his urethra and received a new kidney from his father when he was just 16-months-old.  Now, Gabriel needs a new kidney.

Gabriel has been receiving dialysis three times a week while he’s in Sioux Falls.  He’s a tough match for a new kidney because he’s already gone through one transplant.

Still his family isn’t giving up.

They are also using GoFundMe to find a donor.

“This will be extremely difficult, because this is Gabriel’s second transplant. Only 4% of the donor population is a potential match. We must use our network and community to proactively find him a match. Please spread the word,” his family wrote on the crowd-funding website.

According to the GoFundMe, these are some of the requirements for a potential donor:

  • Blood type O Positive or O Negative
  • Male or Female between the ages of 18 and 55
  • General good health

Gabriel’s father Don tells KELOLAND News that they’ve received more than 100 responses since the Tweet went out.

“Even though we are getting a lot of responses, the odds of finding a match for Gabriel are low,” Don said.  “He has antibodies that make it hard to match.”

He says it will take time to get all these potential donors tested.
