Targeting Cellulite With Non-Invasive Procedures

In just a few weeks, Marcy McQuitty could look different without going under the knife.

“I just like the more defined jawbone,” McQuitty said.

The 55-year-old is giving TruSculpt a try. It uses radio frequency to kill fat cells. McQuitty is going to use the non-invasive procedure on her chin.

“I don’t like this double chin I have. It seems like if I lose more weight, it always just stays there,” McQuitty said.

The FDA-cleared procedure can also reduce the appearance of cellulite. It heats up targeted fat cells in your body.

“Heat it up to about 44 to 45 degrees 44 to 45 degrees celsius. We try to hold it at that temperature for 3 to 5 minutes in order to signal those cells to enter a natural cell death,” Sioux Falls Center for Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Dr. Thomas Howard said.

In addition to TruSculpt, there are a growing amount of non-invasive procedures for cellulite removal. Cryotherapy has patients going into a booth with temperatures as low as minus 100 degrees Celsius. That’s colder than Antarctica. Others use ultrasound technology to target cellulite.

“They are all trying to accomplish the same process,” Howard said.

Whichever procedure, more patients are lining up to try out non-invasive treatments.

“How do I address these areas without going through a long, painful procedure with a big down time,” Howard said.

For McQuitty, TruSculpt took about 20 minutes. Most patients do three treatments and see results within 4 to 12 weeks.

“I’m in the business profession of permanent makeup in town, so I have women looking at me all the time, so it’s very important to me to look good,” McQuitty said.

Three treatments of TruSculpt cost around $3,000. It’s not recommended for Pregnant women and those who have internal defibrillators.
