The St. Francis House in Sioux Falls is raising money for a new building, and Monday night it held its biggest fundraiser of the year.
Jamie Hanlon lives at the St. Francis House with her nine-year-old and one-year-old kids. At their dinner and auction Monday night she explained that she was going to be recognized for her leadership with the St. Francis House. She describes her personal story with a nod to her kids.
“Overcoming a lot of hardships and finally seeing what’s important which is these two individuals with me right now,” Hanlon said.
Hanlon initially struggles to find the words to describe what the St. Francis House means to her and her family.
“A lot of people have given up on me, and they’ve just left when things got rough. And St. Francis House has given me chance after chance,” Hanlon said.
A moment later, and after an emotional pause, she finds a few words.
“It makes me very fortunate and happy, especially to be able to have them with me, because if I was anywhere else I probably wouldn’t last this long, and going through the things that I’m going through,” Hanlon said.
St. Francis House is trying to raise $5.5 million for its new facility. Executive Director Julie Becker says the organization raised $320,000 on Monday. When KELOLAND News spoke with Becker near the beginning of Monday’s event, she said they were nearly halfway to $5.5 million.
