Smithfield, formerly known as John Morrell, is going to expand in downtown Sioux Falls.
KELOLAND News told you in May about two building permits submitted to the City of Sioux Falls valued at around $2.5 million.
That was for a holding barn addition onto the existing meat processing plant.
This week the city received more permits from the meat packing plant for the barn. They’re valued at $12.5 million.
Over the years the company has talked about closing its Sioux Falls meat packing plant.
In fact, when South Dakota Governor George Mickelson died in a plane crash in 1993, he was returning from a trip to try to save the plant.
Smithfield is the country’s largest pork processor and hog producer.
KELOLAND News has reached out to Smithfield for comment, but have not heard back yet.
