Smell Across Sioux Falls Due To Excavating Contaminated Soil

News

Emergency crews across Sioux Falls are responding to calls for natural gas smells.

Sioux Falls Fire Rescue says the calls are related to work being done by MidAmerican gas, which is excavating and hauling soils contaminated with mercaptan odorant to the landfill.  The work is being done at the MidAmerican facility on South Blauvelt Avenue.

The city of Sioux Falls says there is no danger to the public from the mercaptan odorant, which is an additive used to help detect the smell of natural gas.  The work is expected to be complete early Wednesday afternoon.

In addition to SFFR, Sioux Falls Police and MidAmerican are working to clear the calls as quickly as possible.
