Sioux Falls Police Search for Witnesses of 2 Drive-By Shootings

Two drive by shootings in a Sioux Falls neighborhood have people on edge, but police say they are prepared for anything– even on a holiday weekend.  Sunday night, police were called to 11th and Summit.  That is on the western edge of downtown.  At 10:15 pm, neighbors heard several gunshots.  12 hours later, a second investigation began when shots rang out near 14th Street and Dakota Avenue.  We rode along with police to learn how they handle these types of crimes.

“I just like the rush of doing something different every day, really,” Officer Chase Vanderhule, Sioux Falls Police Dept., said.

After gunshots shook up a neighborhood Sunday night and Monday morning, Vanderhule may have a busy day ahead of him.  The drive-by shootings occurred within his regular patrol area in central Sioux Falls.

“That area, pretty hot and heavy.  Especially in the Mercato’s area and stuff.  It’s typically what’s designated, what people call Sioux Falls’ hood, if you will.  Quote unquote,” Vanderhule said.

Vanderhule says he is keeping an open for any potential witnesses or individuals connected to the crimes.

“Whether it’s a crime against property or crime against a person, it’s something we have to take very seriously,” Sgt. Jon Thum said.

Thum says drive-by shootings are still fairly uncommon in the city.

“They just happen when they happen.  It’s not necessarily tied to a holiday or even tied to the weekend,” Sgt. Jon Thum said.

Even with these two investigations, and saturation patrols on the look out for drunk drivers, the workload has remained pretty routine for the police department.   As Officer Vanderhule looks  for answers, he says people –who have information about the shootings — and come forward, can make a big difference.

“The best thing you can do after the safety aspect is down and you’re no longer hearing rounds, if you can get any kind of information for us at all, and immediately call; that’s going to converge officers to the scene immediately,” Vanderhule said.
