Sioux Falls Man Faces Charges for Mutilating Ex-Girlfriend With Scissors

A Sioux Falls woman’s ex-boyfriend is behind bars accused of beating her and mutilating her with scissors.  45-year-old Tony Ledbetter faces multiple counts of aggravated assault.  The 39-year-old victim was taken to the hospital.

At around 5 p.m. Tuesday, a woman was at her home in the 4300 block of West 58th Street. Her ex-boyfriend came over to talk, which led to an argument.

“He ended up punching her in the face.  Slamming her in the ground,” Sioux Falls Police Public Information Officer Sam Clemens said.

Clemens says the woman screamed for him to stop, and then he allegedly tried to quiet her by putting his forearm against her neck and a blanket in her mouth.

“The really disturbing part is he went and grabbed some scissors and sat on top of her and used those scissors to cut off her nipples,” Clemens said.

She got away, and called out for help.  Clemens says the man, identified as Ledbetter, is actually the person who called 911.  The woman was taken to the hospital, but police do not know how she is doing.

“We need to work together as a community in order to assist the victims but also hold the perps accountable,” Amy Carter with Children’s Inn said.

October is Domestic Abuse Awareness month.  The goal is to stop cases like this from happening.  Carter hopes an event later this week will help others to spot instances of domestic violence before they escalate.

“Just encouraging them there is support.  They don’t deserve the abuse.  That’s a really powerful statement you can make to someone, and they deserve help and they deserve better.  And we will not judge.  We will just offer support,” Carter said.

The Children’s Inn is holding a “Take Back the Night” event on Thursday to support victims of domestic violence.  The dinner and program starts at 6 p.m. at the Old Courthouse Museum.  As for Ledbetter, he is set to appear in court in Lincoln County Wednesday morning.

A GoFundMe account has been set up for the victim.
