Sioux Falls Man Charged With Assault And Accused Of Hurting A Child

A Sioux Falls man is in jail, accused of hurting a 1-year-old boy and strangling the child’s mother until she was unconscious.

Police say 24-year-old David Connell had been drinking Friday, before he and a woman got into an argument.

“She believed he was intoxicated and there was an argument that had happened, the boyfriend pushed his girlfriend to the ground, he ended up biting her in the face, he strangled her to the point where she lost consciousness,” Sioux Falls Police, Sam Clemens said.

When the woman woke up, she says her 1-year-old boy, who had been in a crib, was crying on the floor.

“The argument continued and the boyfriend again strangled her a second time to the point where she lost consciousness as well,” Clemens said.

This all took place Friday night, but police say they weren’t notified until Tuesday.

“Grandparents were watching the 1-year-old and noticed he was kind of holding his arm different, or wasn’t really using it, took him to a clinic and then found out that the arm was broken and that’s where we came in and went forward with our investigation,” Clemens said.

After talking with the boy’s mother, police arrested Connell at his home along the 500 block of Fairfax Avenue.

There was also a three year old girl inside the home during the incident.  Police say she was not hurt. Connell is not a parent to either of the children. His bond is set at $10,000 cash.
