Sioux Falls Father-Daughter Take Off On 6,000 Mile Photography Road Trip

What started out as a one week camping trip turned into something a lot bigger.

A Sioux Falls father and daughter are taking a 6,000 mile photography adventure beginning Monday.

KELOLAND News caught up with the pair as they get ready to take off on their month long trek.

The Heckel’s have always been a tight knit family.

“The time that I’m able to spend with my parents are really important to me and it’s really cool that I get to do it in this way,” Emma Heckel said.

She’s talking about the 6,000 mile road trip she and her dad will be going on starting Monday.

“It’s kind of a thing where I think it’s always been like this. He has an idea and then I just say, ‘ok’ and it just kind of goes like that…so,” Emma said.

“It started as a camping trip maybe a week or so and then we. I took a trip to Death Valley in March and got some pretty cool photography so I kind of wanted to share that with my daughter,” Paul Heckel said.

Paul says they’ll be camping in a tent on top of their car for a month for one reason.

“Some great photos, that’s kind of the goal of this whole thing and obviously spending time together and seeing the country,” Paul said.

And the thought of being out in the wilderness doesn’t scare Emma one bit.

“I’m a pretty go with the flow type of person so the bugs might get to be a little bit but I’m actually really immersed in where we are, Emma said.

Along the way they’re both hoping to fine tune their skills but most importantly create memories that will last a life time.

“See all the scenery and develop my writing and film photography skills and spending quality time with my dad,” Emma said.

“When you get out into the working world, these opportunities come up very rarely so I think she’s going to really have a good time doing that,” Paul said.

The duo will travel to the badlands tomorrow then it’s on to the west coast.
