Sideras Pleads Not Guilty To Child Porn Charges

News

Former Sioux Falls Fire Chief Jim Sideras made his first court appearance on Thursday in connection with his arrest on child porn charges. Sideras pleaded not guilty to 10-counts of possession and remains free on bond.

Authorities arrested Sideras earlier this month after they searched his Sioux Falls home where they removed computers CDs, receipts and other items.  Sideras is no longer employed by the city and this was our first look at him since his arrest.

Jim Sideras was silent as he entered the courtroom with his attorney to face child porn possession charges.

Perry Groten: Hey Jim, what do you think about the charges?

Sideras said very little once inside the courtroom.  The judge asked Sideras if he understood the charges filed against him and he replied, “yes.”

The hearing was brief and Sideras left court without a word.

Groten: Do you want to say anything to the people of Sioux Falls?

The hearing marks the first step in a long legal journey for Sideras.  The child porn charges carry a maximum sentence of up to 30-years in prison.  The judge ordered Sideras to have no unsupervised contact with anyone under the age of 18.    He cannot have access to the Internet and he must forfeit his passport and cannot leave the state of South Dakota.

A preliminary hearing for Sideras will be held within 45 days.
