People who live at a west side Sioux Falls apartment building are thankful to be alive today. At about 10:30 Sunday night, bullets started flying into apartments on Valhalla Boulevard not too far from The Empire Mall.
KELOLAND News talked with a woman who says she’s scared, but not surprised.
Coming home from work last night, Kathy didn’t expect to find her home surrounded by police.
“It was scary for everybody. I just feel bad for the people that it actually hit their apartments,” said Kathy, lives in the apartment building that was shot.
Police found 17 shell casings in the parking lot of the apartments on West Valhalla Boulevard. One apartment hit with bullets had a couple of adults and three kids inside at the time of the shooting.
“We had another apartment that had two people. One of them was in bed and one of the bullets went through the wall and into the mattress and actually came out of the mattress that she was laying on, so thankfully she wasn’t harmed either,” said Sioux Falls Police Officer Sam Clemens.
Officer Sam Clemens says they are thankful no one was hurt or killed in this random act of violence. Right now, officials believe this was not a targeted shooting.
Kathy, who didn’t want to share her last name, says the violence in the area has been escalating for weeks.
“Yeah, they’ve been trying really hard to get the riff-raff out of here, but it just doesn’t seem to be working well. They come back,” said Kathy.
For Kathy and others who live in the area, it’s been a restless few days while police look for more clues in the case.
“It was pretty bad. I mean, like I didn’t sleep all night because I was terrified that they were going to come back,” said Kathy.
Officer Clemens says they don’t have any leads in the case right now.
