A friend of the victim tells KELOLAND News Wounded Arrow identified as a woman.

The Center for Equality in Sioux Falls said this is the second transgender woman murdered in 2017 in the United States.

“While the investigation is ongoing, we see that gender and race often play a role in the escalation of violence toward transgender people,” the organization said in a post on Facebook.

The organization said 2016 was the deadliest year on record for transgender people in America with a reported 25 transgender murders.

Sioux Falls Two-Spirit and Allies posted on Facebook this weekend remembering Wounded Arrow, saying she was fairly new to Sioux Falls.

“Our hearts are broken as we will miss her very much,” the organization said.

Further investigation led authorities to consider Wounded Arrow’s death a homicide. This is an ongoing investigation and more information is expected to be available Monday.
