City Hall in Sioux Falls has another role to play for the community: as an art gallery to showcase regional talent.
“Today we’re going to be announcing an exciting new addition to the city, and that is a visual appreciation and display of the arts in City Hall,” Mayor Paul TenHaken said.
It’s more than a place where government happens.
“This building is really a piece of art in and of itself,” TenHaken said.
You see it both in the building’s architecture and paintings.
“The historic Art Deco feel of this building is really incredible,” TenHaken said. “But what it’s always missed, in my opinion, is a connection to local artists.”
TenHaken showed the first local pieces which will be at City Hall. Exhibits are going to rotate.
“On behalf of the Sioux Falls Arts Council, this has been months in the making, and we’re very excited to be able to present and display the work of local artists,” said Alex Hagen, president of the Sioux Falls Arts Council.
TenHaken says art is more than something nice to look at- it has an economic effect, too.
“People want to move to a city that embraces art and embraces culture. And, especially young people,” TenHaken said.
