The South Dakota High School Activities Association is concerned over a bill that could affect transgender student athletes.
Senate Bill 49 would void a SDHSAA policy allowing transgender students to request to play on the athletic team that matches their gender identity.
The legislation introduced this week would require a student’s sex be determined by their birth certificate or a SDHSAA physical exam form. Similar bills failed in the 2015 and 2016 legislative sessions.
The head of the SDHSAA says members are reviewing the bill, but says they’re worried about the potential law leading to future litigation in court. We’re also working on contacting one of the bill’s sponsors for later Thursday on KELOLAND News.
