South Dakota Secretary of State Shantel Krebs announced her bid for the state’s lone seat in the U.S. House of Representatives on Monday.
Congresswoman Kristi Noem has already announced she will not run for another term in the House, instead bidding to be the first female governor of South Dakota. Noem’s 2-year term ends in January 2019.
Krebs has been serving as the state’s Secretary of State since 2015. Before that, the Republican spent 10 years in the state legislature.
She’s a graduate of South Dakota State University and her hometown is Arlington, SD.
Krebs joins Dusty Johnson, former chief of staff to Gov. Dennis Daugaard, in the bid for the GOP nomination to the U.S. House.
“These days it seems like candidates are supposed to attack each other. Well, not me and not today. Shantel is a friend and I welcome her to the Congressional race,” Johnson said in a statement.
“I believe we must send a proven leader to Washington, DC,” Krebs said in a statement. “I will work to strengthen our national defense, cut wasteful spending, cut taxes and cut the overregulation so businesses can actually create jobs.
