A South Dakota businessman is accused of lying to the government to get nearly $2 million worth of grants and contracts.

Federal court papers say Wallace Tang conspired to start businesses in South Dakota, North Dakota and California.

At one point between 2012 and 2016, Tang is accused of doing all of their business out of South Dakota.  At another point, he allegedly ran them all from a building in California.

During that time, the companies allegedly applied for federal projects through NASA, the National Science Foundation, and the Department of Energy.

Since the the businesses allegedly involved the same people and same equipment, the court papers say the company made 48 illegal claims totaling $1.7 million. Investigators have already recovered some of that.
