After a big weekend, Sanford International organizers are already looking at what they can do for next year. Steve Stricker won the inaugural tournament by shooting 13 under, and took home $270,000 and the Sanford International trophy.
By now, you know the drill. After every big event, it’s time to fold up and put everything away until next year. The date for next year’s tournament is already set. The 2nd Annual Sanford International will take place from September 16 to 22, 2019.
“Everybody worked really hard, really really hard to put this all together,” Greg Conrad, tournament director, said.
Conrad says more than 70,000 people filled up the stands at the Minnehaha Country Club.
“That’s almost after losing two full days of golf on Wednesday and Thursday. We were really happy with it,” Conrad said.
The weather improved and Conrad says that, along with the golf course, volunteer engagement and attendance were some big wins.
“We came out just to see what’s going on and check things out. It’s a nice day out here, so we thought we’d come out and enjoy the weather, and I think it’s a great thing for Sioux Falls,” Chad Focht said.
“I love the fact everybody had a smile on their face at all times. Everybody was happy. Everybody was putting their best foot forward,” Conrad said.
Conrad says there were no major trip-ups, but wants to improve the concession stands and getting information to spectators during the matches for next year.
“I think we can do some better things from a hospitality standpoint and just make little touches that can make things better,” Conrad said.
This year certainly was not a drill, but Conrad says it’s a good starting point to build up Sanford International for the future.
“We’re aiming for great. We didn’t come here to be good; we came here to be great,” Conrad said.
