Legislators made a timing change Friday so a juvenile detention cost-sharing fund stays available for South Dakota counties.
Lawmakers agreed with the suggestion from Governor Kristi Noem that HB 1186 should take effect June 28 rather than July 1.
Existing state law had called for the fund to otherwise end June 30.
The House of Representatives voted 48-19 to accept Noem’s change. The Senate followed 28-3.
“This is one where we’re clearly correcting a mistake,” Senator Craig Kennedy, a Yankton Democrat, said.
The House was still considering at 1 p.m. CT whether to accept a similar suggestion from the governor on the timing of $1 million for wildlife habitat.
