Runners And Walkers Kick Off Fourth Of July Festivities

News

Independence Day kicked off with a run in Sioux Falls. Hundreds laced up for the 5K Fun Run and Walk bright and early this morning.

Before all the fireworks on the Fourth of July, a large group of revelers including 8-year-old Owen Reed and his mom Heather took off from Falls Park.

“You couldn’t get a better day for a run and it was fun to share it with my son,” Heather said.

Despite the scenic route, Owen is pretty clear about his favorite part of the fun run.

Reed: The shade.

Matt Holsen: Was it hot out there?

Reed: Yeah.

Mayor Mike Huether got the race started and says the event, along with today’s parade and lunch, is something he looks forward to all year.

“Kind of just a combination of so much patriotism and hokeyness and just fun and comraderie and then you throw in my last year as the Mayor, and so we’re going to go out on top with a big boom,” Huether said.

More than 600 walkers and runners joined the Mayor this morning, a record crowd.

“It was fun. It was nice to see all the families out being active in the beginning of the day. Just starting the day out healthy,” Heather said.

As for what the rest of the day holds…

“Well we’re going to go to our grandpa’s house and maybe shoot off some fireworks,” Owen said.

And continue to celebrate Independence Day.

On top of hosting the free run and walk, the City of Sioux Falls also handed out free t-shirts.
