A car insurance comparison website has given South Dakota high marks for its safe driving skills.

Both North and South Dakota ranked high in the report, with North Dakota edging South Dakota at fourth and fifth place respectively. EverQuote said that the data comes from its EverDrive app, which drivers use to track their driving habits.

According to U.S. Census information, the study found that Midwestern drivers from the Upper Midwest down to Kentucky are the safest drivers compared to other U.S. regions.

A typical U.S. driver would be a C average student in a high school driving safety class, based a National Center for Education Statistics grading scale. But while law enforcement campaigns have been clamping down on phone use while driving, EverQuote says that speeding still remains as the most common unsafe habit among drivers.
