Regional Health Rapid City Hospital is shipping its garbage more than 300 miles away after the local landfill saw repeated medical waste violations.

The South Dakota Department of Environment and Natural Resources says the hospital is now sending its non-medical garbage to a transfer station in Wall and then on to a landfill in Ogallala, Nebraska.

Denver-based Stericycle remains the hauler for the hospital’s medical waste. That waste is taken by truck to a transfer station in Wall and then by semi to another landfill in western Nebraska.

The hospital did not explain why it’s shipping its non-medical waste out of state.
