Rapid City Hospital Improperly Disposes Waste Despite Fines

Rapid City officials say a hospital continues to dump medical waste at the city landfill despite repeated warnings and fines over the past year.

Rapid City Regional Hospital was first cited for disposing medical waste at the Rapid City Landfill more than a year ago. The landfill has spotted blood-soaked gauze, bloody catheter lines, urine collection containers and fatty tissue.

Reports from the South Dakota Department of Health show the hospital was cited for six violations last year involving the improper disposal of medical waste.

Rapid City public works director Dale Tech says the hospital is making efforts to correct the issue, but the landfill hasn’t seen changes.

Hospital official Nicole Kerkenbush says hospital leaders are in communication with city officials about the waste dumping.
