Preview: first-ever Randy Rohl Youth Prom

News

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — Coming up Friday in the Sioux Falls area is the first-ever Randy Rohl Youth Prom. We dug through our archives to find our coverage of Rohl’s 1979 prom at Lincoln High School and why it was such a big deal.

40 years ago KELOLAND News reported that according to the National Gay Task Force, Randy Rohl and his date’s attendance at the Lincoln prom was the first time two acknowledged gay people went to a high school prom together in the United States.

“It boiled down to other people could take who they wanted to prom, so why couldn’t I take a person who I wanted to prom?” Rohl said in 1979. “I mean, you know, not all people go with their lover, whatever. As was the case with me, and as is the case with many heterosexual persons.”

According to Sioux Falls Pride, Friday’s prom at 7:00 p.m. “is an LGBTQ+ inclusive” event for people between the ages of 15 and 20.
