Positively KELOLAND: Faith In Photography

News

It’s a milestone year for the Faith Temple food giveaway at the Sioux Empire Fairgrounds.

The decade of the Faith Temple giveaway has resulted in the distribution of 10-million pounds of food. One million people have been helped by the program over those years.  And the man who helped start the giveaway is setting his sights on a new pursuit.

Faith Temple Church has been feeding the flock for the last 10 years through its weekly giveaway.

There’s always pretty good people and they’re pretty helpful and they try to help as many people as they can, Patrick Wilson of Sioux Falls said.

But its not just about filling empty stomachs for Pastor Jeff Hayes.

Jesus said when I was hungry, you fed me, Pastor Jeff Hayes said.

Hayes also has a gift for giving people an eyeful.

Caught a couple of pictures of eagles the other day and that was exciting, Hayes said.

What started as a childhood hobby has turned into a full-blown passion for Hayes, whose works are getting more exposure locally and nationally.

My wife said to me, she said, well, why don’t you submit some of those pictures to different companies and see if they’ll publish them and so that’s kind of what happened, Hayes said.

Hayes’ photo of the World War II memorial in Pierre has been on display at the Sioux Falls VA.

And we took nighttime pictures of that memorial, I think the pictures are pretty striking, Hayes said.

Pastor Jeff is considering pursuing photography as a full-time venture once he retires from the ministry.

The ministry is a full-time job if not more than that, but I think when you take photos, if you take your camera with you, you can snap photos here, there, everywhere, Hayes said.

But retirement isn’t yet in the immediate plans for Hayes, who says there are many more mouths to feed through the Faith Temple giveaway.  To Hayes, photography is a different type of calling that provides a window to the soul.

I think every picture that you take, you should hold it up and be reminded of that memory and that place and that person or that animal, that creation of God, Hayes said.
