Positively KELOLAND: 104-Year-Old Parade Grand Marshal

News

The town of Sheldon, Iowa is preparing for its annual Labor Day weekend celebration.  All eyes will be on a red convertible carrying the honorary grand marshal of this year’s Labor Day parade. She’s celebrating more than just this late-summer holiday.

Anna Rensink spends her golden years flexing her green thumb in Sheldon, Iowa.

“Yesterday, I picked seeds from my flowers.  My morning glories dropped way over my windmill and they go on my clothes line, they creep all over.  I did that yesterday, and I washed clothes yesterday.  Got ready for the big day today,” Rensink said.

Anna’s big day is her birthday Thursday.  Her 104th birthday.

“I’m going to go to the Pizza Ranch and all my cousins are going to be there for dinner today.  So that’s going to be nice.  And I go home and I’m really tired,” Rensink said.

But Anna never tires of solving word puzzles.

Perry Groten: “What do you like about doing these puzzles?”
Anna Rensink: “I work puzzles every day. Yup.”
Perry: “Keeps your mind sharp?”
Anna: “The doctor even said it helps you keep your mind bright.  He says keep it up.”

Anna still stays very much up-to-date on current events.  And she has some very definite opinions about this year’s presidential race.

“I don’t like Trump and I don’t like Hillary, so I’ll vote for myself, I’ll be president,” Rensink said.

But if Anna hits the campaign trail, she’ll do it on foot.  She hasn’t driven a car in about 80 years.

“When we were first married, I drove a car, but that didn’t turn out good, so I quit,” Rensink said.

Anna will be in the backseat of a convertible during Sheldon’s Labor Day parade.

“I might be jittery, you know,” laughed Rensink.

But despite a few butterflies, this great-great grandmother will be a great-great grand marshal.

Longevity may run in Anna’s family.  Her brother lived to be 100, and her dad made it all the way to 90.

Sheldon’s Celebration Days start September 1. You can see Anna in the parade through downtown Sheldon on Labor Day, starting at 2 p.m.
