Pop-Up Ice Rink Built In Downtown Sioux Falls

This week’s weather is perfect for a carnival themed all around winter.

The new Sioux Falls Winter Carnival runs all week, all to support the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Sioux Empire.

One of the activities is a pop-up ice rink at 8th and Railroad Center. It’s free with a donation to the Boys and Girl Clubs.

But this isn’t just any ice rink.  It’s not made of ice; it’s actually made of Glice.

The co-founder of Glice flew in from Switzerland to show off the first of it’s kind rink in South Dakota.

“Glice rink is actually made of a material which looks like ice, it feels like ice, but it’s not ice. It’s 100 percent ecological. It doesn’t need electricity and it’s a lot of fun,” Glice co-founder Viktor Meier said.

Meier says it feels just like real ice and can be used year-round. He says they’re even installed in Africa.  If you want to check it out, you can rent skates at the rink.

The Glice rink opens on Tuesday and runs from 4 to 8 p.m. through Friday and 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturday.
